31 Days: Pathway to Perseverance - Drop Everything (Almost)!
Life seems to be a series of sprints, with major hills and valleys. We are either racing to beat the clock (a daily race we are bound to lose) or perhaps the clock is stopped and rerouted by something unexpected. When it is impossible to fit everything into one day or during those derailing moments, what do you leave behind like bread crumbs leading to Hansel and Gretel's fairy tale fate?
If the dishwasher suddenly explodes, filling the kitchen floor with a fast flowing sudsy river, what would you remove from your day to make the time to deal with the mess?
If the school nurse calls and your feverish child needs to go home, what leaks out to take care of the immediate?
A call from the hospital announces the arrival of the newest little family member and everything drops.
What pulls your attention away when moments get stressful? Or, what do you add to your day that realigns your priorities?
I can be an "adder" and a "subtactor." If life is overflowing, I add to my day by running to the refrigerator, nearest cracker box or chip bag to ease the tension. Unfortunately, it only makes things worse, in every possible way. Or I slough off by leaving beds unmade, lunches forgotten and I feel the pressure of uncrossed items on the to do list.
What we get rid of tells where our priorities lie when things get "thin." To keep our foundations firm, the one area we need to add and not subtract is our time with God. Perhaps you cannot get away for scheduled quiet time, so find a new way to stop and make God the priority.
Maybe it is a moment of whispered thanksgiving in the midst of chaos.
Perhaps an audio Bible app will fill the gaps and put wind under wings so you can make it through the day.
Memorizing scripture in advance cracks wide heavens gates when words are heart-spoken or said aloud.
Worship music and praise through song can lift spirits and remind you that Christ is near.
When life is more than you can handle go ahead and let go of the small stuff; but, don't drop everything. Draw close to God.
